Vishuddha - Throat Chakra

Updated: Sep 12, 2022

Vishuddha is the fifth chakra and is connected to the element of sound or space. It is represented by the colour blue and is physically located in the throat area.

Is my throat chakra in balance?

When the throat chakra is out of alignment, ailments affecting the throat, but also the tongue, lips, cheeks, jaw, and ears, as well as the back and lower part of the neck, and even the shoulders can be present. Emotionally, one could suffer from depression, anxiety or low self esteem. When the throat chakra is not clear, you may not be able to express yourself fully and find that communications are stifled.

When your throat chakra is balanced, communicating is easy and you will be able to speak clearly and with compassion as well as be open to listen and hear others.

Ways to balance the throat chakra

  • Wearing blue clothing

  • Carry or work with blue crystals such as aquamarine, turquoise, lapis lazuli and sodalite.

  • Protect your neck. Wear a scarf or clothing that keeps your neck cosy.

  • Chant, sing or hum to get the throat vibrating

  • Practice Simhasana (Lion’s Breath) to open your throat chakra area.

  • Drink warm drinks with honey to keep the throat in fine shape

  • Essential oils of frankincense, rosemary and eucalyptus can be diffused when meditating or worn in an aromatherapy pendant

Affirmations to say or write in your journal

  • I speak my truth

  • I can express myself with ease

  • My creativity is an expression for me

  • I am connected to my truth

  • I am able to express myself freely

  • I trust what I have to say

How do I maintain throat chakra alignment?

I personally love to chant mantras when my throat feels out of alignment. My favourite is Om Gam Ganapataye Namaha. I complete 108 repetitions while diffusing essential oils and using my sodalite mala beads.

I also like to apply the Vishuddha Chakra Perfume Balm on my neck.

Applying my face moisturiser down my neck area while speaking affirmations in the mirror is also part of a regular practice for me.
